Hi! My name is Sophie Gayle and I am a 16 year old watercolor and acrylic artist.
I love painting and drawing small details, or doing portraits. I think its so much fun to get lost in doing the tiny brush strokes and seeing how small you can paint. When I use watercolor, I like to paint a lot of nature, like trees and birds or flowers.
With acrylic, I think its really fun to play with bright colors and retro designs. I love using ink and pen with acrylic for my retro girls portraits (shown below), it creates a cool contrast between the color and black and white. I had the idea for the retro girls because I wanted to explore and learn more about women in different decades.
It is really important to me to help people accept women and femininity in general as something good and empowering rather than weak. Something I hear a lot in school or around people is that you’re too girly or too masculine, like its bad to be either one. I want to show how women and their fashion choices should not be something to make them seem weak or too girly, but rather show how unique and powerful each person is with their own style.
Outside of painting , I love to go thrifting and find old unique clothes that no one else has. Its a good way to help the environment and have a super cool closet. I love listening to a lot of 90s punk rock, especially when I paint. I am hoping to be able to travel all over the world and to be able to paint a lot of new places and people when Im old enough. I love traveling and exploring new places. As an artist, I think its really important to have a broad sense of the world.
